Wat Sraket is located a long the Mahanak and Rob Krung canals, near the Phanfa Bridge with the entrance on Boriphat Road.
This Ayutthaya Period temple was formerly know as Wat Sakae. After Bangkok was founded, King Rama I ordered the construction of the grand palace and the digging of great Naga canals. He renamed the temple as Wat Sraket. The Word Wat Sraket literally means Royal Hair Washing. It was said that king Rama I came through the forest entry and went through the traditional from a long Journey, Cambodia. Such the name was changed to Wat Sraket in 1782.
King Rama III ordered to construct Borom Banphot or Golden Mount to be a Phra Prang but his reign ended and King Rama IV decided to build instead the Chedi. Lanka-style Chedi was added to the top of the Golden Mount during King Rama IV’s reign. The Chedi was completed in the reign of King Rama V. Chedi of the Golden mount houses Relic of Lord Buddha and visitors can take panoramic view of Bangkok.
