The Great Pagoda (Great Chedi)

Posted on 27 June 2008

TheĀ  Great Pagoda directly behind the main Chapel of ordination hall shrined the Buddha relics or other venerated objects.

The Pagoda is the most sacred part of the monastery. The Pagoda of Wat Bowonniwet Vihara was built in similarity to great Pagoda of Nakhon Pathom Prothom Province. This pagoda was measuring over fify metree high. The original model of this was covered with simple plaster but in 1964 the renovations were resurfaced gold mosaic tiles, giving the pagoda a massive and shining appearance.

The first entrance of the Pagoda has two ways of stairs, either from the northeast and southeast, the four corners of this terrace are structures known as Phra Prang, there is one doorway which may enter within the big bell shaped structure. Inside there is a small Vault containing a smaller Pagoda in which the actual relics of the Buddha have been enshrined. The inner vault is open to the Public only once a year or on the important occasions such as Visak Pucha day.
